Linda Twala

Linda Twala, widely regarded as the “father of Alexandra,” has long recognized drowning as a threat to his community and made it his dream to teach the boys and girls of Alexandra to swim. This dream became a reality when I joined ‘uBaba’ Twala to help conceive and develop the Alexandra Youth Swim Academy. The AYSA was the natural outgrowth of my outreach program started in 2019, called “Uplift thru Sport,” that sought to enrich the lives of Alexandra’s youth through greater exposure to organized sports.

Following is uBaba Twala’s letter of commendation:

We wish to express our utmost gratitude to Alexander Madiba “Sasha” Minsky and all of his friends and associates for coming together and raising funds for the brand new swimming equipment, as well coming to spend time with us in the township of Alexandra, the mother of all townships on the mother of all continents.

Sasha is a shining beacon of hope and an example that many others should follow. Thank you for caring for our community with a genuine love for people, and traveling across the oceans in order to help us form and launch the Alexandra Youth Swim Academy – an initiative that will not only affect, but also save the lives of many Alexandrian children as drownings are a sad and unfortunate daily reality for us.

It is no wonder that Sasha shares the name ‘Madiba’ with the father of our nation, Nelson Rolihlahla Tata Madiba Mandela, a man who served God’s children until the very end. There has never been a time where we have needed help more than now. The baton left by the father of our nation, through Sasha, is safe. And we thank you all for giving your time to keep the legacy and spirit of  Nelson Mandela alive. Thank you for helping us save lives.

May God provide you the strength of a lion and the wisdom of Solomon in all of your endeavours.

Yours forever in community service,
Mr. Linda Twala
